About
The Margins Project
Hi! My name is Emma, I was born and raised in California (before you ask, I don't know any celebrities, but am very interested in meeting Taylor Swift). My favorite genres are easily fantasy and fiction—or basically any form of writing where I can fulfill my lifelong fantasies by living vicariously through my character. When I'm not holed up in my room with homework, I am playing softball, listening to music (Folklore and Tortured Poets Department are my go-to), or driving north to snowboard and mountain bike. Despite being a homebody, I love exploring the outdoors with my golden retriever, Charlie.
I started The Margins Project as a writer who was searching for a place to be heard. For a long time, I struggled to find a platform where my voice felt welcome—not polished enough, not grown enough, not loud enough. Writing, for me, was always personal and exploratory, yet most spaces felt restrictive or inaccessible, especially for young writers still discovering what they wanted to say.
The idea of the margins comes from both literature and life. In books, the margins are where readers underline, question, and respond—where meaning quietly grows beyond the printed text. In the world, the margins hold voices that are often overlooked, softened, or sheltered. Youth voices, in particular, are frequently filtered, simplified, or spoken for rather than listened to.
The Margins Project exists to bring those voices into the light. By creating a space where young people can share their stories without pressure to perform, this project hopes to return writing to what it has always been meant to be: a way of noticing, remembering, questioning, and connecting. When young voices are given room to speak freely, storytelling becomes not just an art, but an act of understanding.
